Starting your journey at Totton College is just a click away

When you embark on a SEND course at Totton College you open the door to endless possibilities. Our dedicated team is here to guide you through the application process and ensure your unique needs are met.

How to apply online

Our online application process:

  1. Head over to our online application form and fill it out on our course pages.
  2. The form will include an option to include details on your special educational needs, disabilities, or an EHCP (Educational Health and Care Plan), if you have one.
  3. If you’re interested in our Skills for Life course designed especially for SEND, choose the ‘Skills for Life’ option.
  4. You will be invited to a meeting with the Skills for Life Curriculum Manager to discuss course options that are the right fit for you.

The EHCP Consultation Process

Many parents and young people are already aware of the EHCP and consultation process, but it is not familiar to everyone, nor does it work in exactly the same way for every LEA (local education authority), school or college.

The LEA consults a variety of age-appropriate educational settings based on the needs and provision outlined in your EHCP document to determine whether the setting can meet your needs or not.

Initially, this process is between the LEA and the education provider. If you would like a specific education provider to be considered then it is important to make sure the LEA is aware, either by contacting their SEN team directly or referencing the desired placement in the most recent annual review of the EHCP (these should be held annually within the current education setting).

Once a school or college has decided if they are able to meet need or not, they will inform the local authority. Schools and colleges are asked not to directly inform parents/carers of this decision at this stage.

If the school or college agrees to meet need the student will still be required to make an application, as referenced above.

Come and explore our community

Thinking about joining us? We’d love to show you around! We encourage transition visits for all young people with SEND moving to a new setting.

We host group visits, usually for those transitioning from local schools. If you’d prefer a more personal touch or are joining at a different time, we can arrange an individual tour for you – several times if needed.

During your visit, you can:

  • Ease any worries or nerves by familiarising yourself with our space
  • Work out the best transport routes between your home and college
  • Meet the teaching and support teams who will facilitate your learning
  • Find out more about our courses
  • Check out our facilities to ensure they’re a good fit for you
  • Discuss any medical or additional support needs you might have
  • Get a tour of the college building and meet the manager of your subject

We host a special welcome day during the summer for all new applicants who have applied in time. You’ll get a taster of your chosen course and a feel for life at Totton College.

Whether you’re just starting to consider us or are already eager to join, we’re here to support every step of your journey! We can’t wait to welcome you.

To find out more about our services and courses, or to book a consultation to discuss your requirements, please contact the Faculty Curriculum Manager at info@totton.ac.uk or call 023 8087 4874.
