Creative facilities and equipment

Art studios

At Totton College, we have two open-plan art studios, each designed to foster creativity and practical skills in various artistic disciplines. The studios feature large plan chests for storing student artwork and drawing papers, as well as drying racks for pieces that need to air dry.

Equipment and materials

  • Drawing and painting: Students can use studio easels for large-scale work and tabletop easels for smaller projects. We provide a range of drawing materials including pencils, coloured pencils, felt pens, acrylic paints, and watercolours.
  • Digital and projection tools: Each studio is equipped with two PCs. An overhead projector and a screen are also available.
  • Additional resources: Aprons are available. We also have large and portable light boxes so students can reproduce imagery.

Specialised printing and clay work facilities

  • Printing press: A mobile printing press is available for techniques like dry point and lino printing, complemented by materials such as lino cutters, acetate plates, and both water-based and oil-based inks.
  • Clay work: Facilities for working with clay include a variety of tools, small turntables, and shape cutters.

Photography

Our photography department offers resources for both analogue and digital photography.

  • Film photography: We provide Pentax SLR film cameras, and our large darkroom facility is equipped with 10 photographic enlargers and ample space for developing black and white chemical film.
  • Digital photography: The department also has five digital SLR cameras. Our computer suite, with 16 PCs loaded with photo manipulation software like Photoshop, doubles as a photographic studio with movable tables, blackout blinds, and black and white backdrops.

Computer suite

The dedicated computer suite is designed to support a wide range of digital creative processes.

  • Editing and design: Each workstation is equipped with advanced manipulation software facilitating sophisticated photo editing and graphic design.
  • Flexible learning space: The layout includes moveable tables and a centrally linked PC to an overhead projector, allowing for versatile teaching and presentation methods.
