This course is ideal if you are thinking of a job in a child, health or social care setting. It offers a great introduction to the world of these ever-changing and rewarding industries and will give you all the information and experience you need to take the next step into further learning or employment. As part of the course, you will complete a minimum of 60 hours of work experience, attending placements one day a week. Ideally you will experience placements in two different settings within child, health or social care.

Funding and bursaries

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over. Eligible learners will be enrolling on a level 3 or above course and are a UK or EU national. For further information, visit gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan.

Entry requirements

At least three GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D), or a Merit or Distinction at BTEC Level 1. A Disclosing and Barring Service (DBS) check is required.

You’ll develop a range of skills essential for working life:

Develop a range of transferable skills for the sector

Gain relevant work experience for your future progression

Work Experience

You’ll be on placement for at least 1 day a week from as early as possible! There are also two one-week block work placements in a child, health or social care setting.

Modules

You’ll study ten modules which are all directly relevant to health and social care work.

The mandatory modules are:

Understanding disability

Communication in health and social care

Working in health and social care

Health and safety in the work place

Person-centred approaches in health and social care

The optional modules include:

Duty of care in health and social care

Equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

Activity provision in health and social care

Understand how to handle information in social care settings

Team work in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

Assessment

You’ll be assessed through written and practical assignments and can gain Pass, Merit or Distinction. Assignments include essays, presentations, videos, discussions and posters.

Enrichment Opportunities

We normally have a range of outside speakers from the local field of Health & Social Care. You’ll also get the chance to go on trips to appropriate Health & Social Care settings.

Career and Progression

You can progress to Level 3 qualifications such as Children’s Play, Learning and Development or Health and Social Care. If you want to start your career, you can apply for junior positions in a range of areas including care homes, nursing, occupational therapy, and social and community work, or an apprenticeship in childcare.
