Entry requirements
Students will need at least 2 GCSEs at Grade 1 or above.
A good standard of English, an interest in beauty and/or hairdressing and the ability to follow instructions and safety guidelines are essential.
What will I learn?
This introduction to the hair and beauty sector includes a broad range of services and treatments, reception duties and health and safety. Beauty therapy treatments include skin care, make-up and manicure, while shampooing and conditioning, hairstyling, plaiting and twisting and temporary colouring are covered in hairdressing. You will also be taught about the anatomy and physiology of the hair and skin as well as the science behind each technical service.
Work Experience
You’ll be expected to do two block of one week’s work experience, and can request extra days.
Modules
You’ll cover a range of units in order to develop an understanding of the hair and beauty sector, including comparisons between different types business and the clients they attract, understanding the importance of personal presentation in a salon environment and working as part of a team.
Assessment
A combination of portfolio evidence, practical tasks, knowledge and understanding tasks or an online test. Industry work experience hours will also be required outside of your teaching timetable.
Enrichment Opportunities
There are plenty of enrichments available, including Beauty Club, hair activities and the chance to be involved with Totton Carnival.
Career and Progression
You can continue to develop your skills and choose your direction by progressing into Level 2 Beauty or Level 2 Hairdressing if you are recommended by your teachers. You will continue to study English and maths if you haven’t yet achieved grade 4. Learners can also progress towards a professional qualification while working in a salon.

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over.
