Totton College art lecturer and local artist, Clayton Lovell, held his meet and greet evening for his art exhibition at the Hanger Farm Arts Centre called ‘From the Garden and the Other Painting.’
From the Garden and the Other Painting is dedicated to exploring the ever-changing light and colours that can be experienced and seen from your garden. Studying and trialing different painting techniques, Clayton has captured the diverse colours and seasonal transitions from his home in Totton.
Clayton’s inspiration for this project came during lockdown as he was unable to travel to locations to paint. Using his garden as his muse, he used light, colour, and environmental techniques in his work. Influenced by different artists and styles ranging from abstract creations, Impressionism, and Expressionism.
Talking about this exhibition Clayton said: “I started this work in 2020, but the earliest painting goes back to 1996. I have always been inspired by nature and the colours it provides, but lockdown meant that I was unable to travel. Being in the same environment of my garden, I could explore different angles and really focus on the transitions that were happening around me. Focusing on creating different pieces from the same source material, giving a new perspective each time. Something I encourage all my students to do.”
This is the first one-person show in 25 years that Clayton has done, and he is planning to exhibit in more local venues to showcase his art pieces.
